Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Myles Powell found his way just in time to will Seton Hall to a gutsy 63-58 win over Creighton, Saturday night at Prudential Center in Newark.

Powell (22 points, seven rebounds, four steals) showed once again why he’s the heart and soul of this year’s Seton Hall men’s program. The junior guard didn’t have a good shooting night from the field (5-for-14) against Creighton (13-11 overall, 4-7 Big East). But when it was time to win, when it was time for the face that runs the place to step up and lead, Powell was money.

Creighton led 54-49, with 3:41 left in the second half, when Powell got going for the Pirates. He scored 13 of the team’s last 15 points, including going 9-for-9 from the foul line. He struggled with foul trouble most of the night but shook it off when his team needed him the most.

The win for Seton Hall (14-9 overall, 5-6 Big East) kept them in the middle of the Big East standings’ log jam. Five teams have identical 5-6 records. Villanova and Marquette appear to be two locks for the NCAA Tournament. For the rest of the conference, it’s going to be about which one or two teams separate themselves from the pack.

What Powell has been able to accomplish this season has been impressive. He’s led the team in scoring 17 of Seton Hall’s first 23 games this season. The Pirates, unlike past teams don’t have multiple options to close out games or carry them offensively. Powell is the engine that makes them go and he’s the closer when the game’s on the line.
