The buzz around Seton Hall is growing, it’s no coincidence Myles Powell is a big reason.

A big reason for Seton Hall’s strong start in Big East conference play is the added dimension Powell has brought to the team.

This is a veteran group with seniors Angel Delgado, Khadeen Carrington, Desi Rodriguez, and Ismael Sanogo. Powell, a sophomore, has brought added energy to the team which has served as a spark for the older players.

In Seton Hall’s home win over Georgetown, Powell ignited the Pirates with 19 points, six steals, and five rebounds. He plays big-time defense, isn’t afraid to take it strong to the basket, and can also shoot the ball.

Powell is averaging 14.2 points per game while shooting 48 percent from the field. In Seton Hall’s previous two games, against Butler and Marquette, his production slipped due to a bout with the flu. In the road loss to Marquette, the Pirates lost by 20 and much was made of their missing Powell’s energy level.

Powell, Production, and Commitment

What’s definitely not missing is Powell’s commitment to staying in shape. As Jeremy Schneider, of NJ.com, wrote, Powell dropped 40 pounds as a freshman. He’s stayed with the new approach to dieting and its played a crucial role in his progression for the Pirates.

When it comes to value, he plays a big role in Seton Hall’s success. He brings a defensive intensity to the backcourt which compliments the explosiveness of Carrington and Rodriguez, but you can’t leave him alone either or he’ll take you apart with his outside shot.

From the three-point line, he’s shooting 41 percent. He’s taken the next step as a sophomore and has helped lighten the load for the seniors.

What makes Seton Hall so dangerous is their experience, versatility, and depth. Powell’s youth and energy compares to being a blasting cap for their dynamite.

Seton Hall is doing their best to keep up with Villanova at the top of the Big East standings, these two teams are looking like the favorites as the conference tournament approaches.

But, there’s still plenty of basketball left on the schedule. The Pirates are looking for more than just a Big East title, they want to make some noise in March and send their seniors out on a strong note. Powell is going to play a huge role for them down the stretch.
