Fordham point guard Nick Honor has had an impressive start this season. In the small sample size of six games, the freshman has become the team’s leading scorer.  Averaging about 18 points per game, Honor put up efficient numbers in Fordham’s victory over Alabama A&M. In 27 minutes, Honor scored 17 points off of 53 percent shooting while going 3-4 from the 3-point line. His play has helped the Rams win 4 straight to improve their record to 5-1.

In the Johnny Bach Classic last weekend Honor averaged 20 points per game, three assists, and three rebounds. His numbers were good enough to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. His best performance was against FIU where he scored a season high 28 points off of 53 percent shooting. Honor was also 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

His combination of shooting and ability to score off the dribble makes him a problem for opposing teams to defend. He’s able to keep defenses on their heels due to his ability to get to the free throw line. Honor’s free throw shooting has been superb, he’s shooting at just about 94 percent.

“Not only can he catch and shoot, he can shoot off the dribble as well,” said Fordham head coach Jeff Neubauer, when asked about his point guard’s game against Alabama A&M and his overall play this season. “He values the ball and he did a terrific job today with only one turnover, really unselfish. So he’s just playing the right way.”

What makes Honor a key player for the Rams is his ability to create a shot for himself whenever the team has a breakdown on offense.  “Whenever it runs down and we need that push, I definitely got to go with the ball and just make something happen because coach has a lot of trust in me,” said Honor.

That says a lot for Neubauer to give a freshman point guard that much responsibility. It also shows why he’s Fordham’s best player on the floor.

Look for Honor and Fordham to keep the winning streak alive against their next opponent the Manhattan Jaspers, December 1st at Draddy Gymnasium.
